LATROBE, Pa. (Aug. 31) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team wrapped up the opening weekend of the season at the Saint Vincent Bearcat Challenge on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets fell 3-0 to La Roche, before coming up just short of victory in a 3-2 setback against Alfred.
Waynesburg (0-4) dropped its opener against the Redhawks (1-2) on the day by the set scores of 25-20, 25-20, 25-18. Match two saw the Jackets rebound from a 25-19 loss to the Saxons (2-2) in the opening set with wins in set two (25-23) and three (25-13). After Alfred tied the match with a 25-21 victory in set four, it clinched the win by coming out on the right side of 15-12 score.
Junior
Hannah Colvin (Hagerstown, Md. / Grace Academy) was solid on the attack in the two matches. She averaged 3.38 kills per set and tacked on four aces. She also finished second on the team with 14 total digs and helped out on two blocks. Colvin was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts over the weekend.
First-year junior
Mya Brooks (Lansing, Mich. / Holt) averaged 3.00 kills per set over eight sets and was among the team leaders with a .278 hitting percentage.
Junior
Alexis Phillips (New Kensington, Pa. / Plum) and senior
Alyssa Proper (Titusville, Pa. / Maplewood) split up the setter duties and piled up 34 and 33 assists, respectively. Phillips also chipped in 11 digs. Speaking of digs, sophomore
Alyson Johnson posted a team-best 31 on the day.
Waynesburg returns to the court on Thursday, Sept. 5, when it travels to Franciscan. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
