Volleyball heads to Franciscan

Jackets come up short in 3-1 match against the Barons

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (Sept. 5) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team traveled to the State of Ohio on Thursday night for a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match with Franciscan. The Yellow Jackets put forth one of their most spirited efforts of the young season, but it wasn't enough on the night, as the Barons picked up a 3-1 win.

Franciscan (4-2) edged the Jackets 26-24 in the first set and took a 2-0 advantage by pulling out another nail-biter, this time by the score of 25-23 in set two. Waynesburg (0-5) battled back to take set three 25-21 and seemed to have momentum in its corner. Unfortunately, the host squad got back on track to rebound with a match-deciding 25-15 triumph in set four.

The Yellow Jacket attack was paced by juniors Haley Pelini (Bessemer, Pa. / Mohawk) and Hannah Colvin (Hagerstown, Md. / Grace Academy), who tied for the team lead with seven kills each. Junior Mya Brooks (Lansing, Mich. / Holt) chipped in six successful attacks on the night.

Senior Alyssa Proper (Titusville, Pa. / Maplewood) helped out with a team-high 12 assists. Sophomore Alyson Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / St. Joseph Central Catholic) contributed a handful of points from behind the service line via a match-high five aces.

Johnson also helped out defensively with a squad-best 14 digs. Sophomore Mallory Stopko (Freeport, Pa. / Freeport) chipped in 12 digs. Speaking of defense, Brooks led all match participants with three total blocks.

The Jackets will be back on the road Friday for a match at Mt. Aloysius. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
