Wagner scores twice at PSU Harrisburg

Sophomore's big day not enough as Waynesburg drops 3-2 final score

HARRISBURG, Pa. (Aug. 31) – Sophomore Leesha Wagner (Lower Burrell, Pa. / Burrell) had one of best days as a Yellow Jacket during Waynesburg's Saturday trip to Penn State Harrisburg. Unfortunately, it wasn't quite enough to lead her team to victory, as the host Lions came back for a 3-2 win.

Wagner recorded her second two-goal game as a Jacket, with the first score coming late in the 16th minute of play to open the day's scoring. Senior Teagan Jenner (Berlin, Pa. / Berlin Brothersvalley) picked up an assist on the tally. The Waynesburg (1-1) defense maintained that edge until the halftime break. Harrisburg (1-1) ended the Jackets' shutout bid 2:34 into period number two to knot the score at 1-1.

Wagner struck again, this time in the 62nd minute, to put her team back on top at 2-1. Unfortunately, that was the last time Waynesburg held a lead on the day. The Lions struck again in the 81st minute to tie the score at 2-2, before picking up their first-and-only lead of the afternoon with 5:04 showing on the game clock.

After being outshot 6-1 in the first half, Waynesburg rebounded to log eight total shots in the second period. Five of those eight attempts were on goal.

Freshman Autumn Blair (Penn Hills, Pa. / Penn Hills) made her collegiate debut in net and stopped seven of 10 shots on goal. The rookie played all 90 minutes.

The Jackets play a third-straight road game to open their schedule on Tuesday, Sept. 3, when they travel to La Roche. Start time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
