Waynesburg heads to La Roche

Jacket comeback ends just short of victory against Redhawks

PITTSBURGH, Pa. (Sept. 3, 2019) – After falling behind 2-0 shortly after halftime, the Waynesburg University women's soccer team battled back to tie its game at La Roche in the 58th minute. Unfortunately, the host Redhawks had the last laugh by scoring with less than nine minutes left in the game to pull out a 3-2 victory.

La Roche (1-1) broke open a scoreless tie with the game's first tally in the 30th minute of play. The host squad doubled its advantage to 2-0 2:11 into the second half. That multi-goal advantage lasted just 29 seconds, as Waynesburg (1-2) got on the board with 32:20 showing on the game clock.

Junior Jessica Silbaugh (South Riding, Va. / Freedom) got her team on the board after taking a feed from senior Teagan Jenner (Berlin, Pa. / Berlin Brothersvalley). As the Jacket defense slowed the La Roche attack, Jenner knotted the score up at 2-2 with a goal of her own in the 58th minute.

Unfortunately, Waynesburg couldn't find a way to log a go-ahead point before the Hawks were able to take the lead for good. The home team got that deciding tally in the 81st minute and the Jacket offense was unable to respond in kind.

Seven different Yellow Jackets attempted one shot each in a balanced offensive effort. Freshman Autumn Blair (Penn Hills, Pa. / Penn Hills) started and played 61:29 in net as the goalie of record. She stopped five-of-seven shots on goal. Sophomore Emma Burns (Avella, Pa. / Weirton Madonna) logged the other 18:31 between the pipes.

Waynesburg plays a fourth-straight road game on Sept. 7, when it travels to Marietta. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
