Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer locks horns with Marietta

Jackets battle, but drop 1-0 final score

MARIETTA, Ohio (Sept. 7) – The Yellow Jacket women's soccer team traveled to Marietta Saturday afternoon to face the Pioneers in a non-conference match. Waynesburg's defense was stout, but the offense couldn't break through in support, as the Pioneers pulled out a 1-0 win.

The game started out slow in the first half for both teams as they went scoreless over the first 45 minutes. The Yellow Jackets (1-3) were unable to record a shot in the half, but freshman goalkeeper Autumn Blair (Penn Hills, Pa. / Penn Hills) managed to keep the team in the game by saving both shots on goal by the host squad.

Marietta's (2-1) attack finally broke through in the 52nd minute, finding the back of the net and taking the lead 1-0 over Waynesburg.

Waynesburg played well in the second half, outshooting the Pioneers 6-5 in the second half and had a shot to force overtime late in regulation. Unfortunately, a last-second shot by senior Gina Bonura (Moon Township, Pa. / Moon) was turned away by the opposing keeper to preserve the victory.

Senior forward Christina Golonka (Burgettstown, Pa. / Madonna) was the only Yellow Jacket to record multiple shots with two, while four others each had one shot attempt on goal. Blair played all 90 minutes in net, making four saves on five shots on goal.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action Wednesday for their first home game of the season against Muskingum at John F. Wiley Stadium. Start time is set for 6 p.m.
