WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 11) – Wednesday evening's unseasonable heat and humidity didn't deter the Waynesburg University women's soccer team as it hosted Muskingum at John F. Wiley Stadium. The Yellow Jackets scored once in each half and got some solid work in goal from freshman
Autumn Blair (Penn Hills, Pa. / Penn Hills) to defeat the Muskies 2-0.
The eventual game-winning tally was scored by sophomore
Leesha Wagner (Lower Burrell, Pa. / Burrell) who fired a rising shot in the 22
nd minute that glanced off the keeper's hands and into the back of the net to give the Jackets (2-3) a 1-0 advantage. The score stayed the same when the first half came to a close and the two teams broke for their respective locker rooms.
After a well-earned break from the stifling conditions, the two teams battled through the first 25 minutes of the second period with neither changing the scoreboard. The Jackets eventually picked up their insurance goal in the 70
th minute when junior
Maddy Manz (Cecil, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) let fly from around 25 yards out to beat the Muskingum (1-3) keeper.
Blair was solid in net throughout the 90 minutes of her first collegiate shutout. The first-year keeper racked up seven saves against the Muskies in notching her first college win.
The Jackets outshot their opposition 15-10, but Muskingum attempted eight shots on goal to Waynesburg's four.
The Orange and Black play a second-straight home game on Saturday when Mount Aloysius comes to town. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
