STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (Sept. 18) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team hit the road to face off against Franciscan in a non-conference matchup Wednesday afternoon. Although the Yellow Jackets took a scoreless tie into the second half, the Barons ended up outscoring them 2-1 over the final 45 minutes to score the victory.
Waynesburg (2-5) got strong play from the defense and freshman goalkeeper
Autumn Blair (Penn Hills, Pa. / Penn Hills) in the first half. Blair made six of her seven saves on the night over the first 45 minutes.
Franciscan (3-3) opened up the scoring just under a minute into the second half for a 1-0 lead. The Barons then extended that lead to 2-0 in the 71
st minute of play.
Waynesburg didn't give up and broke up the shutout with 5:41 remaining in the second half when sophomore defender
Meghan Briski (Gibsonia, Pa. / Pine-Richland) found the back of the net for her first of the season to cut Franciscan's lead in half. Unfortunately, the road team couldn't pull out one more goal to tie things up at 2-2.
Franciscan edged out Waynesburg in shots (14-6), shots on goal (9-2) and corner kicks (5-1) in the contest. In addition to Briski's goal, junior
Emily Hill (Johnstown, Pa. / Richland) registered three shots, one of which was on frame. Blair played keeper for 85:10 in the game and made seven saves, before fellow freshman Kennedy Shuck (Marietta, Ohio / Marietta) finished up the final 4:50 of the match.
