WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 28) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team played a rare Sunday match against Penn State Altoona. The Yellow Jackets duked it out over nine flights, but came up just short of victory in a 5-4 loss to the Lions.
Waynesburg (1-6) found itself behind the eight ball after dropping two-of-three doubles contests. Freshman
Hayley Sweeney (Johnstown, Pa. / Richland) and junior
Katie Dollard (Bradfordwoods, Pa. / North Allegheny) picked up a forfeit win at the number-three spot.
Freshman
Madison Trent (Shanksville, Pa. / Shanksville-Stony Creek) earned a 7-6, 6-4 triumph at second singles and was joined in the win column by senior
Lauren Wadsworth (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler). Wadsworth rolled to a 6-3, 6-3 sweep of her opponent at the number-four spot.
Junior
Abby Walbrown (Cecil, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) logged a forfeit win at the number-six position. A big turning point of the contest came at fifth singles, where senior
Sierra Stevens (Bellwood, Pa. / Bellwood-Antis) bounced back from a 6-4 setback in the first set with a dominant 6-0 victory in set two. Unfortunately, Stevens fell 10-7 in the third-and-final set.
Waynesburg gets back to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) competition on Friday with a road trip to Saint Vincent. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
