WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 31) – The Yellow Jackets honored its six-man senior class prior to Friday night's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) finale against Thiel. Five of those half-dozen honorees were in the lineup against the Tomcats, with three of them logging wins as part of a 26-12 Jacket victory.
The night started with senior
Cory Supan (McDonald, Pa. / South Fayette) taking part in an exhibition match. When the varsity action started, Waynesburg (12-4, 2-0) found himself in a 6-0 hole because of a forfeit at 125 pounds.
The first contested bout of the night saw the Jackets cut their deficit in half thanks to a 4-2 decision win for freshman
Harley Constable (Smithfield, Pa. / Albert Gallatin) The Tomcats (6-3, 1-1) rebounded with a decision of their own at 141 to retake a six-point lead at 9-3.
It was the last victory for the visitors until 197 pounds.
The Jackets took firm control of the match by winning five-straight weight classes. Junior
Josh Kuslock (Hickory, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) tied the contest with a pin in just one minute. Freshman
Colby Morris (Waynesburg, Pa. / Waynesburg Central) won perhaps the most anticipated contest of the evening when he squared off with Thiel junior Austin Bonacci. Morris took a 3-0 lead early in the second, then held on for a 4-2 triumph.
Next up was showdown of Wayneseburg senior
Zach Mackall (Austintown, Ohio / Austintown-Fitch) and Thiel's Peyton Hearn, an undefeated second-semester transfer from Division I Edinboro. Hearn scored first and tried several times to throw or headlock Mackall for a quick win. However, the bigger, stronger, more experienced Mackall kept his head and methodically wore Hearn down for an impressive 15-4 major decision.
Senior
Dillion Charlton (Stoystown, Pa. / North Star) added more bonus points with a 12-2 major decision at 174, before his classmate
Dan Verhovsek (Johnstown, Pa. / Richland) completed the five-bout win streak with a last-second takedown that led to a 3-1 decision victory and the match-clinching points that made the score 23-9.
After Thiel scored a decision at 197 pounds, freshman
Rocky McGeary (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny) closed out the win with a 10-3 decision triumph at heavyweights.
With dual competition completed, Waynesburg is off until Saturday, Feb. 8, when it takes part in the John Summa Memorial Invitational, which is hosted by Baldwin-Wallace. Start time is scheduled for 10 a.m.
