BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Jan. 4) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team tipped off 2020 with a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) road trip to Geneva on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets combined a slew of outstanding individual efforts into one of the squad's best team performances in recent memory as they defeated the Golden Tornadoes 93-76.
Waynesburg's (2-10, 1-3) explosive offensive output produced its most points since dropping 93 in a win over Westminster on Jan. 26, 2019. It also tied for the highest single-game team point output for a PAC team this year.
The Yellow Jackets featured four double-digit scorers, two who tallied eight points and a seventh who put up seven points. Junior
Andrea Orlosky (Shelocta, Pa. / West Shamokin) flashed the game that earned her second-team all-conference honors this past winter. She posted a double-double on 21 points and a team season-high and contest-best 15 rebounds. She went eight-of-13 from the floor and knocked down five-of-eight free throw tries. Orlosky added three assists and three steals to an outstanding afternoon on the hardwood.
Sophomore center
Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) nearly logged a double-double of her own with 19 points and nine rebounds. Senior Alli Delaney (Belmont, Ohio / Union Local) and sophomore guard
Kacey Kastroll (South Park, Pa. / South Park) contributed 14 points each to the winning effort. Delaney knocked down a team-best three three-pointers and grabbed eight boards.
Freshmen
Anika Dansby (Massilon, Ohio / Washington) and
Leighton Croft (Morgantown, W.Va. / Trinity Christian) tallied eight points each, while senior
Erin Joyce (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bishop Canevin) was fantastic in the passing game with a game and team-season-high 10 assists. Junior guard
Elena McDermott (Slippery Rock, Pa. / Slippery Rock) dished out eight helpers of her own off the bench. The Jackets racked up 29 assists on 35 field goals. That total is the highest in the conference this year.
Both teams shot out of the gate in a thrilling and entertaining first quarter that saw Waynesburg outscore Geneva (1-9, 0-3) 31-25. The home-standing Golden Tornadoes responded by winning the second period 21-18. By the time the two teams broke for halftime, the Jackets were clinging to a 49-46 edge on the scoreboard.
The two teams turned in another closely played 10 minutes in the third, which saw the Jackets nudge ahead by two more points at 69-64. The game was ultimately decided in the fourth, when Waynesburg put up 24 points to close out the victory. Leading 77-70 with 6:22 left in the contest, the visiting team locked down the win with a 14-3 surge that made the score 91-73 on 1:30 showing on the game clock.
The victory emphatically snapped the team out of a seven-game losing streak.
The Orange and Black will play its final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday, Jan. 8, when the team travels to Division II Malone. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
