CANTON, Ohio (Jan. 8) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hit the road Wednesday night for a game with a strong Division II opponent in Malone. The Yellow Jackets trailed by just one point after the first period, but strong second and third stanzas by the Pioneers led the way to 95-63 win.
Waynesburg (2-11) was paced by freshman guard
Anika Dansby (Massillon, Ohio / Washington), who tallied a team-high 14 points on four-of-eight shooting. She went two-for-three from three-point range on the night.
Sophomore
Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) nearly logged a double-double after posting a 10-point, eight-rebound performance. Sophomore
Kacey Kastroll (South Park, Pa. / South Park) added 10 points of her own over 22 minutes off the bench.
Kastroll posted six of those 10 points midway through the first quarter on back-to-back three pointers that gave Waynesburg a 14-12 lead with 4:06 remaining in the period. Malone (9-5) closed out the first 10 minutes of the contest on a 5-2 spurt to take a 17-16 lead.
Dansby opened the second-period scoring with a field goal that gave the Orange and Black an 18-17 edge. Unfortunately, the home team answered with a 24-4 run that moved Malone ahead 41-22 with 3:11 showing on the second-quarter clock. The final stretch of the first half was played evenly (7-7) and when the two teams broke for halftime, the Pioneers were ahead 48-29.
The third quarter also belonged to Malone, which found itself ahead 75-43 heading into the fourth period. To Waynesburg's credit, it played the opposition evenly (20-20) over the final 10 minutes of competition.
The Yellow Jackets return to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Saturday when they host Washington & Jefferson. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
