WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 15) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hosted the PAC-leading Saint Vincent Bearcats at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets hung around with the Bearcats' fast-paced offense, but eventually fell to the number one team in the conference 103-87.
Sophomore center
Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) set a career-high in points scored with 27 on 11-of-19 shooting from the field and five successful free throw attempts. Fuller also brought down a game-high nine rebounds in the contest.
Freshman forward
Leighton Croft (Morgantown, W.Va. / Trinity Christian) had her top scoring game of the season as well, finishing with 16 points on four-of-seven from the field, including two three-pointers. She also went six-for-seven from the free throw line.
Junior
Andrea Orlosky (Shelocta, Pa. / West Shamokin) and sophomore
Kacey Kastroll (South Park, Pa. / South Park) each added 11 points on the day, while senior guard
Alli DeLaney (Belmont, Ohio / Union Local) contributed 10 points and eight rebounds, the most boards she has had as a Yellow Jacket.
After beginning the game down 5-0, Waynesburg (5-18, 4-10) responded by tying the game up at 5-5. From that-point on, though, Saint Vincent (17-6, 13-1) took control of the contest by tallying points on nine-straight possessions to build its lead to 25-11 with 5:40 remaining in the opening quarter. By the end of the first 10 minutes, Waynesburg trailed 36-26.
The Yellow Jackets managed to keep pace with the Bearcats for a majority of the second quarter, cutting the deficit to eight points (53-45) with just over a minute before halftime. However, Saint Vincent again got hot and scored six of the last seven points of the half to take a 59-46 lead into the locker room.
Throughout the second half, Waynesburg was able to play with Saint Vincent, but eventually the high-powered offense of the Bearcats managed to put away the Yellow Jackets.
With two games remaining in the regular season, Waynesburg is locked into a playoff spot as at least the seven-seed in the upcoming PAC tournament.
Waynesburg will be back in action for its penultimate game of the regular season this Wednesday when it travels to Thiel. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
