GREENVILLE, Pa. (Feb. 19) – Wednesday night's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) road trip to Thiel was a tense one for the Waynesburg University women's basketball team, as it opened the final week of its regular season. However, a huge night from sophomore center
Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) and a breakout fourth quarter sealed up a 79-58 victory over the Tomcats.
Wednesday night's contest had a much different feel than Waynesburg's (6-18, 5-10) 93-40 triumph over Thiel (0-24, 0-15) back on Jan. 18. The Jackets led by just two points (18-16) after the first quarter, and were clinging to a three-point advantage (30-27) halftime advantage.
Waynesburg put a little distance between itself and the opposition after outscoring Thiel 23-18 in the third quarter. The Orange and Black was finally able to put the game away in the fourth.
Leading 53-45 after 30 minutes of play, the Tomcats pulled to within seven points (57-50) a short time into the final 10 minutes of action. It was at this time that the visitors were finally able to truly enforce their will and take control of the contest thanks to a 15-2 run that lasted until the game clock showed 3:54 remaining in the contest.
Waynesburg led by as many as 24 points (77-53) with 1:46 left to play on the evening. With the win, the Jackets moved into a tie for sixth place with Bethany in the PAC standings.
Fuller was a force on the inside for the victors, putting together her most impressive double double of her collegiate career. Not only did she pour in a game-high 25 points, but she also grabbed a team season-high and personal collegiate-best 21 rebounds, which tied for the second-highest single-game total in the PAC this season.
Junior
Andrea Orlosky (Shelocta, Pa. / West Shamokin) added a double-double of her own, which included 19 points and 16 rebounds. Senior Alli Delaney (Belmont, Ohio / Union Local) was the team's third double-digit scorer, going for 11 points on five-of-10 shooting. She also recorded six rebounds and three assists.
Speaking of assists, senior
Erin Joyce (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Bishop Canevin) dished out a contest-best nine helpers.
The Jackets were truly effective on the board, yanking down 62 rebounds, to the Tomcats' 35.
With one game left on the regular season schedule, Waynesburg is heading to the eight-team PAC playoffs as either the number-six or number-seven seed. The winner of the Yellow Jackets' senior day showdown with Bethany will be the six, with the loser getting the seven. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
