Baseball faces Mitchell in seven-inning doubleheader

Jacket offense stalls in sweep at the hands of the Mariners

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 5) – The Waynesburg University baseball team played a seven-inning doubleheader with Mitchell on Thursday. The Yellow Jacket bats struggled against the Mariner pitching, as Waynesburg fell 3-0 and 13-0.

Sophomore pitcher Cody Ray (St. Clairsville, Ohio / Union Local) was the biggest bright spot of the day for Waynesburg (1-7). He allowed just two earned runs in a complete-game outing in the opener. Ray yielded six hits and walked four, while racking up eight strikeouts.

Sophomore Joe Sabolek (Lynnwood-Pricedale, Pa. / Belle Vernon) started and took the loss on the mound in game two. He allowed five runs, two of which were earned, on five hits and four walks. Sabolek struck out four in the loss.

Three Jacket errors played a role in eight unearned runs picked up by Mitchell (4-3).

Waynesburg will try to rebound during its final day of the trip on Friday when it plays two against Mount Union. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
