MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (March 6) – The Waynesburg University softball team played three games Friday at the Fast Pitch Dreams Spring Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Yellow Jackets went 1-2 on the day over a trio of highly competitive contests.
Things started well for Waynesburg (1-3), which defeated Hilbert (0-8) 1-0 behind a solid pitching outing from junior
Emma Kubalak (Spring Mills, Pa. / Penns Valley). Kubalak scattered eight hits and struck out five to log her first win of the season. The Jackets managed four hits, two of which came from freshman catcher
Brin Hunter (West Alexander, Pa. / McGuffey), who also drew a walk.
Sophomore
Alexis Beauregard (Holland, Ohio / Chapelgate Christian Academy) scored the game's only run when freshman
Haley Livengood (Bruceton Mills, W.Va. / Preston) reached on an error.
Game two saw the Jackets tangle with a solid Wilkes team (6-3). Waynesburg scored first, but the Colonels picked up a pair of runs in the fifth on their way to a 2-1 victory. Hunter, who added a third hit on the day, scored Waynesburg's lone tally during the at-bat of freshman
Lauren Lober (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston).
Juniors
Kayla Alderson (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) and
Hannah Batovsky (New Salem, Pa. / Brownsville) both went two-for-three in the loss. Alderson picked up a double.
Freshman
Kaylee Stewart (Athens, Ohio / Athens) pitched well enough to win against Wilkes. She scattered seven hits and didn't walk a batter in the complete game.
Waynesburg finished the day by facing another team with a winning record in Wesley (11-3). The Wolverines opened the scoring with two runs in the first, before the Jackets fired back when Livengood singled home senior
Cheyenne Wasko (Brownsville, Pa. / Brownsville) in the second.
Wesley extended its lead to 4-1 with a two-spot in the fourth, but the Jackets took a last shot at victory when Alderson doubled in Hunter in the sixth. Unfortunately, that was as far as the comeback try came, as the Yellow Jackets fell 4-2.
Stewart started and worked two innings, before handing the ball over to Kubalak, who worked the final five frames of the late contest. The junior struck out four and gave up four runs on five hits and a walk.
Waynesburg is scheduled to have another very busy day tomorrow when it wraps up its stay down south. The Yellow Jackets are scheduled to play Barton at 9:30 a.m., Centenary at 11:30 a.m. and Rio Grande (Ohio) at 1:30 p.m.
