Sophomore heavyweight ranked third in Division III

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Jan. 22) – The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) released its first regular season poll of the 2020-21 season. Waynesburg University was represented in the rankings by sophomore Rocky McGeary (McDonald, Pa. / West Allegheny), who grabbed the number-three spot at 285 pounds.

Last year, McGeary posted a 38-3 overall record with a 12-1 mark in dual competition. He went a perfect 23-0 in bonus-point matches, including a 15-0 mark in bouts that ended in pin-fall.

The standout heavyweight secured Waynesburg's seventh-straight Presidents' Athletic Conference heavyweight title and added PAC Newcomer of the Year and PAC Most Outstanding Wrestler trophies at the event. Following his successful run at the PAC Championships, McGeary went on to win the 2020 NCAA Division III Southeast Regional title. That crown earned him a spot at this past winter's Division III National Championships.

Even though he wasn't able to continue his postseason run, McGeary was still named first-team All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). By the time the season came to an end, McGeary had piled up five individual tournament titles, two PAC Wrestler of the Week awards and five PAC Rookie of the Week accolades. He'll enter this upcoming wrestling season riding an 18-match winning streak.

McGeary is also ranked first in the country by Flowrestling.org.
