WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 23) – The Waynesburg University football team hosted Saint Vincent on Saturday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown. The Yellow Jackets scored first and were thinking upset, but the visiting Bearcat defense stifled the host offensive efforts, while the offense provided more than enough support in a 38-7 Saint Vincent win.
Despite continuing to play with a noticeable hard cast on his left wrist, freshman wide receiver
Dakota Romantino (Charleroi, Pa. / Charleroi) continues to be a bright spot for the Yellow Jackets (1-6, 1-5). He pulled in four passes for 63 on the game's first possession, including the first play from scrimmage, which was a nine-yard completion from sophomore quarterback
Trevor Miller (Bellwood, Pa. / Bellwood-Antis). Miller was making his collegiate starting debut under center.
The Miller-to-Romantino connection capped the 12-play, 85-yard drive with a picture-perfect 48-yard scoring toss that put Waynesburg up 6-0 with just under nine minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Freshman kicker
Brennan Campbell (Meyersdale, Pa. / Meyersdale) connected on the extra point try to extend the advantage to 7-0.
Unfortunately, that was the Jackets' final time with the lead, as Saint Vincent (4-3, 3-3) tied the score with 1:16 remaining in the opening period and tacked on 17 points before halftime to build a 24-7 lead. The Bearcats added a touchdown each in the third and fourth quarter to bring about the final score.
Romantino pulled in a game-high 11 receptions for 142 yards and his team's lone score. He is currently ranked fourth in the PAC in receptions per game (6.0), second in receiving yards per game (112.7) and second in yards per catch (18.8). He is the only player in the league to be in the top four of all three categories, and his four receiving touchdowns give him the number-seven spot in that category.
Miller completed 18-of-32 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown in his first significant action at Waynesburg. Junior running back
Justin Flack (Derry, Pa. / Derry) posted a game-high 34 yards rushing on 12 carries.
Freshman
James Davis (Kersey, Pa. / St. Mary's) tallied a game-high 10 total tackles, including five solo stops. Freshman
Brandon Tyson (Upper Marlboro, Md. / Frederick Douglass) and senior
Bret Hicks (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) chipped in nine tackles each. Tyson logged a game-high six solo stops.
The Jackets hit the road on Saturday, Oct. 30, for a road PAC contest at Geneva. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
