Men's soccer plays to 2-2 draw

Yellow Jackets end season by going to OT with visiting Geneva

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 27) – The Waynesburg University men's soccer team closed the 2021 season on Wednesday night by hosting Geneva. The Yellow Jackets looked poised to end the year with a major upset of the traditional Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) power, but a late Golden Tornado rally saw the night end in a 2-2 double-overtime tie.

After neither team was able to score in the first half, Waynesburg (3-12-1, 2-6-1) got on the board 1:34 into the second half when junior Samuel Hawkins (St. Mary's County, Md. / Great Mills) put home his team-leading sixth goal of the campaign. Sophomore Logan Gonzalez (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Blackhawk) picked up the assist on the score.

The Jackets doubled their advantage less than six minutes later when sophomore Tyler Mohrbacher (Freedom, Pa. Freedom) found the back of the net on an unassisted tally, his third on the year. With 38 minutes remaining in the second half, Waynesburg looked poised to notch its biggest win in years.

Unfortunately, Geneva (6-8-3, 4-4-1) had different ideas. The visitors cut the Jacket advantage in half with a goal in the 63rd minute. With less than two minutes remaining, the Golden Tornadoes got the equalizer.

The two teams played out the final 1:03 of regulation to send the contest into overtime. Waynesburg had a golden opportunity to steal back the win, but a good-looking opportunity for senior Daniel Hott (Cumberland, Md. / Fort Hill) missed just wide to the right late in the 93rd minute.

After both teams took three shots each in the first 10-minute overtime period, Geneva logged both tries in the second frame of extra time. However, freshman goalkeeper Michael Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) stood tall in net to preserve the draw. His night featured 13 saves, including four in overtime.
