Volleyball downs Franciscan 3-1

Yellow Jackets pick up convincing road PAC victory

STEUBENVILLE, Ohio (Oct. 5) - The Waynesburg University volleyball team traveled to Franciscan on Tuesday night for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match. The Yellow Jackets avenged a heart-breaking 3-2 loss from earlier in the season by downing the Barons 3-1.

The victory also improved the Jackets' record to 9-10 overall and 3-6 in conference play. The last time Waynesburg tallied that many victories was in 2011, when it went 9-17 on the season. A third conference win in a season is the most since the 2014 squad logged four league triumphs.

Waynesburg got the evening off to a quick start by taking sets one and two by the scores of 25-22 and 25-18. After Franciscan (2-9, 1-8) rebounded to take set three 25-21, the Yellow closed the night in convincing fashion by downing the Barons 25-16 in set four.

Freshman Makayla Osborn (Salem, Ohio / Heartland Christian School) powered the Waynesburg offense by tying for the match high with 14 kills. Junior Alexys Marsh (Panama, N.Y. / Panama Central) chipped in nine successful attacks on the evening. Marsh was also a defensive force around the net, as she tied for the contest best with five blocks.

Freshman Paige Cousley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) helped out the attack with a team-best 29 assists. Senior Alyson Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / St. Joseph Central Catholic) and freshman Jordan Stein (Manor, Pa. / Norwin) posted 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

The Jackets are back in action this Saturday, when they travel to Chatham for a PAC tri-match. Waynesburg faces two of the top teams in the conference in the host Cougars and Westminster. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
