WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Nov. 16) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hosted Case Western Reserve for a non-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup on Tuesday. The Yellow Jackets fell into a deep early hole and, despite their comeback efforts, came up short in a 91-67 setback.
After Waynesburg (0-2) opened up a 4-2 lead on baskets by senior
Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) junior
Anika Dansby (Massilon, Ohio / Washington), the Spartans (2-2) responded by scoring 21 of the next 25 points to take a 26-6 lead with 1:10 remaining in the first. The Jackets scored the final four points of the quarter to cut the deficit to 25-10 at the quarter break.
The second quarter was a much more tightly paid 10 minutes, as Case outscored Waynesburg 22-19. By the time halftime rolled around, the Spartans held a 47-29 advantage.
The Jackets started to turn things around in the third quarter, during which they outscored the Spartans 21-18. With 4:32 remaining in the period, Waynesburg put together its best stretch of the night: a 10-0 surge that allowed the home team to pull to within 15 points (65-50) heading into the fourth quarter.
The Jackets managed to cut the deficit to 14 in the fourth quarter, but that was as close as the comeback try came to fruition.
Fuller led the Jacket offense with 21 points on a very efficient 10-of-14 shooting performance. She also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and logged a contest-best four blocks. Sophomore
Marley Wolf (Ellwood City, Pa. / Riverside) added 15 points and six rebounds, while classmate
Avery Robinson (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) collected 12 points on four-of-seven shooting from three-point range.
Dansby tied for the game high with six assists.
