Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Jacket women travel to New York for Friday road game

Yellow Jackets lead early, but fall at Houghton

HOUGHTON, N.Y. (Nov. 19) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team made one of its longest road trips of the season on Friday night, when it traveled to Houghton. The Yellow Jackets built a slim lead at the end of the first quarter, but couldn't hold it, as the Highlanders rebounded to take a 63-56 win.

Waynesburg (0-3) got a very productive night from senior Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) who logged a double-double on 16 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Sophomore guard Avery Robinson (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) generated a team-high 18 points, 12 of which came on four made three-pointers.

The Yellow Jackets suffered the loss, despite holding a sizeable 54-40 rebounding advantage that included 10 boards by junior Anika Dansby (Massilon, Ohio / Washington). Dansby tied sophomore Marley Wolf (Ellwood City, Pa. / Riverside) for the game high in assists with five each.

Waynesburg also showcased a perfect nine-for-nine effort at the free throw line.

After falling behind 4-3 following 2:47 of play, the Jackets roared back with nine unanswered points produced by three different individuals. With 4:41 remaining in the first quarter, Waynesburg found itself with a 12-4 advantage. However, Houghton (2-1) responded by scoring the final four points of the period to cut the Waynesburg advantage to 12-8.

The Jackets rebounded by building multiple eight-point leads, including a 23-15 edge halfway through the second quarter. Once again, Houghton had a response to the Jacket challenge, this time outpacing Waynesburg 12-2 over the final five minutes of the opening half. By the time play ceased for halftime, Houghton led the visitors 27-25.

The opening minute of the third quarter saw the two teams combine for four made field goals on four possessions and after the flurry, the Highlanders were up 31-30. The visitors bounced back with five unanswered points to grab a 35-31 edge and the two schools traded points until there was 3:54 showing on the third-quarter clock. That was the starting point of a 16-6 period-ending run for Houghton that moved the home team ahead 47-41 as the fourth quarter got underway.

Once again, the momentum of the contest swung back into Waynesburg's favor, thanks to an 11-5 run that tied the game at 52-52 five minutes left to play in regulation. Unfortunately, the Highlanders ended the night by scoring 11 of the game's final 15 points to grab the win.

The Jackets play their second of two road games in as many days tomorrow when they travel to Penn State Behrend. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
