LATROBE, Pa. (Nov.27) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team traveled to Saint Vincent College for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup on Saturday. The Yellow Jackets fell into a deep hole early, but battled back throughout the game. Unfortunately, the visitors fell to the Bearcats 72-67 in their first PAC game of the season.
Waynesburg (0-6, 0-1) trailed 13-3 with just over five minutes left in the first quarter. The Jackets cut the lead to nine following two free-throws by junior
Leighton Croft (Morgantown, W.Va. / Trinity Christian) to make the score 21-12.
In the second quarter, the three pointers started to fly for the Jackets, as they went three-for-three on shots from beyond the arc. Two of the makes came from senior Kasey Kastroll (South Park, Pa. / South Park) and the other was added by sophomore
Avery Robinson (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna). Kastroll knocked down a three-point shot with eight seconds left in the first half to bring the score to 36-27 in favor of Saint Vincent.
The Bearcats (2-3, 1-0) came out of halftime with the hot hand and maintained a 14-point lead for most of the period. Waynesburg showed its poise and toughness by storming back mid-way through the fourth quarter after three-pointers by Kastroll and junior
Anika Dansby (Massilon, Ohio / Washington).
With 15 seconds left in the game, Waynesburg pulled to within two points of tying the score after a pair of made free throws from Kastroll. With only 15 seconds left in the game, the Jackets were forced to foul multiple times, Saint Vincent finished off the win by going three-for-four at the foul line.
Though it didn't lead to a win, the Jackets shot an impressive 9-for-16 from beyond the arc.
Waynesburg was led by Kastroll, who went 7-for-10 from the field for 22 points. She went 4-for-5 from the three-point line and 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.
Robinson added 12 points on five-of-12 shooting. Dansby posted nine points on the day, while senior
Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) chipped in a team-high nine rebounds.
Waynesburg travels to conference foe Grove City on Wednesday, Dec 1. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
