WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Dec. 4) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team played its first home game since Nov. 16 on Saturday, when it hosted Franciscan. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a big early lead and never looked back as they rolled to an 83-55 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win.
Saturday marked the most points scored by the Jackets (1-7, 1-2) this season and the fewest points given up to the opposition in a game. The victory over the Barons (0-7, 0-3) also featured Waynesburg's widest margin of victory since a 93-58 win over Geneva on Feb.5, 2020.
The host squad scored the first seven points of the contest and held a 13-1 advantage before giving up Franciscan's first field goal of the day, which came with 2:38 remaining in the first quarter. Waynesburg went to period number two holding a 17-5 advantage.
Things kept going Waynesburg's way in the second quarter, as the Jackets outscored Franciscan 22-12 in the period. By the time the two teams broke for their respective locker rooms, the hosts led 39-17.
Momentum swung into the Barons' favor for the first time during the third, as the Green and Gold whittled an intimidating deficit down to just nine points (42-33) with 4:23 remaining in the period. However, Waynesburg gathered themselves and closed the quarter with a 10-2 run that made the score 52-35 in favor of the home team.
The Jackets saved their best offensive effort for the fourth quarter, where they piled up 31 points in route to the victory. They never trailed on the day and boasted several notable statistical advantages.
Waynesburg knocked down an efficient eight-of-17 tries from three-point range, while Franciscan converted just five of 27 tries from long range (18.5%). The Jacket defense limited the opposition to just 24.4% from the field (20-of-82) on the day. The Orange and Black was also better from the free throw line, connecting on 19-of-26 attempts (73.1%), as compared to a 10-of-29 showing (34.5%) for the Barons.
Waynesburg boasted a pair of players who logged double-doubles in the win. Sophomore guard
Avery Robinson (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) poured in a game-high 20 points on an efficient 8-of-11 shooting day. She was particularly accurate from long range, drilling four-of-six three-point attempts. She tied for the team high with 10 rebounds and dished out five assists during a very busy day on the floor.
Senior guard
Kacey Kastroll (South Park, Pa. / South Park) tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds. Senior center
Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) shook off a slow start to pile up 18 points and seven rebounds. She scored 12 points, yanked down four rebounds and swatted all three of her blocks over the final two quarters.
Waynesburg is off until Wednesday, Dec. 15, when it moves away from PAC play with a home game against Carnegie Mellon. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
