LATROBE, Pa. (Feb. 13) – Though the Waynesburg University women's basketball team was unable to come away with a win at Saint Vincent on Saturday, a pair of freshman guards gave tantalizing glimpses into what the future could hold for the program. Rookie backcourt mates
Marley Wolf (Ellwood City, Pa. / Riverside) and
Avery Robinson (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) both cracked the 20-point mark, but the Bearcats won the day by a final score of 82-64.
Saint Vincent (3-0, 3-0) jumped out to a 7-0 lead to open the game grew that advantage to 19-5 with 3:33 remaining in the first quarter. Robinson led a Jacket charge with three unanswered three-pointers to pull the visiting team to within five at 19-14 with just over two minutes remaining in the first quarter. SVC rebounded by tallying the final six points of the period to take a 25-14 advantage to quarter number two.
The second quarter belonged to the Bearcats, who held double-digit leads throughout the 10-minute span. A three-point play by Wolf and a steal by Robinson at the end of the first half helped keep the Jackets in the contest, which saw SVC take a 45-35 edge into the break.
Neither team could get its respective offense going as the second half got underway. It took 3:17 before Waynesburg junior
Abigail Green (Forestville, Pa. / Portersville Christian School) dropped in a layup for the first points of the quarter. Unfortunately for the visitors, the Bearcats answered with six-straight points and moved ahead 51-37.
By the time the fourth quarter got underway, the host squad was ahead 60-47. Waynesburg pulled to within 11 of the eventual victors, but that was as close as it came to completing a monumental comeback.
Robinson and Wolfe finished one-two in scoring on the day with 23 and 22 points, respectively. Wolfe was perfect from beyond the arc, knocking down all four of her three-point tries.
Though senior
Andrea Orlosky (Shelocta, Pa. / West Shamokin) saw her streak of three-straight games with at least 18 points come to an end by tallying seven markers on the day, she dominated the glass to the tune of a game-high 17 rebounds. She also tied for the contest lead with five assists and blocked two shots.
"I saw some definite improvements today," said Waynesburg head coach
Sam Jones. "Two of our freshmen had great games to lead us, but we need to avoid long scoring droughts. We also need to box out and take care of the ball. Once we start doing those things, we are going to start going places."
The Jackets outperformed Saint Vincent at both the free throw line and beyond the three-point arc. Waynesburg made eight-of-23 from long range, while holding the Bearcats to five-of-26 from downtown. The Jackets also connected on 16-of-23 from the charity stripe, eight of which were converted by Wolf, while SVC made 11-of-21 attempts.
Waynesburg comes home on Wednesday, Feb. 17, for its next contest, which features first-year PAC member Franciscan. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
