NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (Feb. 6) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team played its second-straight road game on Saturday to open the 2020-21 season, this time against Westminster. Senior guard
Andrea Orlosky (Shelocta, Pa. / West Shamokin) exploded for 26 points and 15 rebounds, but her individual efforts weren't enough to overcome a large third-quarter deficit as the Yellow Jackets fell to the Titans 65-58.
Orlosky's 26 points were the most she's scored in a game since Feb. 16, 2019 against Bethany. That same year, she was named second-team All-PAC. Her 15 rebounds were the second-most she's had in a game in her career. The senior standout brought down 16 boards last season against Thiel on Feb. 19.
Seven minutes into the first quarter, the Yellow Jackets (0-2, 0-2) found themselves going basket-for-basket with the Titans (2-0, 2-0) and trailed 11-10. However, Westminster (2-0, 2-0) finished the opening quarter on a 7-0 run to extend its lead to 18-10.
Waynesburg battled its way back to a three-point deficit on multiple occasions in the second quarter, including a 23-20 score with 6:57 left in the half. Westminster again ended the quarter on a high note, outscoring the Yellow Jackets 16-8 to bring the halftime score to 39-28.
Westminster came out firing in the second half began and built leads as large as 23 points. However, Waynesburg put together its own run to end the quarter and pull itself back into the contest. The visitors closed the third period on a 16-3 surge over the final six minutes and cut its deficit to 10 at 56-46 with 10 minutes left in regulation.
A pair of free-throws by junior center
Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) made the score 60-54 with 4:39 showing on the game clock. Unfortunately, that was as close as the comeback attempt came to fruition, as Westminster closed out the seven-point victory.
Fuller finished her afternoon with 14 points and five rebounds, while sophomore point guard
Anika Dansby (Massillon, Ohio, / Washington) added 11 points, three rebounds, and a team-high three assists.
Waynesburg shot 23-for-65 (35.4 percent) from the field, but only connected on just two of 21 three-point tries. The Yellow Jackets were out-rebounded by the Titans 53-40.
Veteran Waynesburg head coach
Sam Jones was pleased with his team's perseverance against a quality opponent in Westminster.
"I was happy that we were able to get back into the game and we showed a lot of fight," Jones said. "We just need to work on not digging ourselves into such a deep hole."
Waynesburg will play its first home game of the season on Monday, Feb. 8, when it hosts Geneva. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
