Box Score WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 8) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hosted its first game at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse since Feb. 24, 2020, on Monday against Geneva. The Yellow Jackets built up a strong lead early and led through halftime, but ultimately could not hold on as Geneva pulled away over the final two quarters to win 72-65.
Tied 4-4 early in the first quarter, Waynesburg (0-3, 0-3) went on a 12-2 run over the final five minutes to build its lead to 16-6 by the end of the frame.
The Yellow Jackets built leads as high as 12 points in the second quarter before Geneva (2-1, 2-1) started to slowly chip away at the advantage. A 19-6 run over the majority of the quarter gave the Golden Tornadoes their first lead of the contest with 1:04 left in the first half. However, Waynesburg scored the final five points of the half to enter the locker room with a 31-28 advantage.
Geneva took the lead back with 7:54 to go in the third quarter, and moved ahead by 10 points on multiple occasions, including at 52-42 with 1:57 left in the quarter. A pair of free throws by senior guard
Andrea Orlosky (Shelocta, Pa. / West Shamokin) and a three-pointer by freshman guard
Avery Robinson (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) cut that deficit back down to 52-47 entering the fourth quarter.
The Yellow Jackets carried that run into the final frame, scoring the first seven points of the quarter to take a 54-52 advantage with 8:28 left in regulation. However, Geneva responded right back with a a three-pointer to regain the lead for good.
Orlosky paced the team in both points (19) and rebounds (11) for the second-consecutive game and added one block and a team-high four steals. Junior center
Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) also recorded a double-double on the night, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds with two blocks and three steals.
Robinson had perhaps her best night of her young career, tallying 14 points on six-of-14 shooting from the floor, pulling down seven rebounds and dishing out two assists. Sophomore point guard
Anika Dansby (Massillon, Ohio / Washington) was the fourth Yellow Jackets to tally double-digit points with 10. She also dished out a team-high four assists.
Both Geneva and Waynesburg shot roughly around 32 percent from the field in the contest, but Geneva managed 17 more shots than the Yellow Jackets, due in part to bringing down 25 offensive rebounds. Waynesburg lost the overall rebound battle 61-47.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action this Saturday, Feb. 13, when they travel to Latrobe, Pa. to take on Saint Vincent. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
