WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 14) – The Waynesburg University softball team hosted Bethany for a Sunday Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. Runs were tough to come by, as the two conference foes split the twin bill.
Bethany (3-5) struck first for a 4-1 win in the opener, before freshman
Ella Brookman (Washington, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) pitched the Yellow Jackets (5-3) to a 2-0 triumph in the late contest.
Sophomore catcher
Brin Hunter (West Alexander, Pa. / McGuffey) got things started with a bang by teeing off on her first homerun of the season in the bottom of the first inning to put the Jackets up 1-0. Unfortunately, that was the only run tallied by the home team in the early contest. Bethany tied the game in the top of the third and tallied the eventual game winner in the fourth. The visitors tacked on an insurance run in the sixth and posted the opener's final score in the seventh.
Waynesburg outhit the Bison 7-5, despite suffering the loss. Hunter led the offense with three hits in four at-bats. Freshman
Sydney Senay (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) added a pair of base knocks in three at-bats.
Senior
Emma Kubalak (Spring Mills, Pa. / Penns Valley) got the start in the circle and worked a seven-inning complete game. She allowed three earned runs on five hits and a walk. Kubalak logged a pair of strikeouts in her most recent start.
Brookman was almost untouchable in game two as she limited Bethany to three singles over a complete-game win. She struck out five opposing hitters and didn't yield a walk as she went to 3-0 on the year and dropped her team-best ERA to 1.29.
Waynesburg got all the offense it needed in support of Brookman in the bottom of the first inning when Senay doubled home sophomore
Reghan Benschoter (Newark, Ohio / Granville). Benschoter scored again in the sixth when she sprinted home on a sacrifice fly to left that was recorded by freshman first baseman
Emma Bliss (Uniontown, Pa. / Laurel Highlands).
Five different Jackets tallied one hit each in the win.
Waynesburg returns to the diamond on Tuesday, March 16, with a road trip to Geneva for a doubleheader with the Golden Tornadoes. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
