BETHANY, W.Va. (March 2) – During the second half of Tuesday evening's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) women's basketball game at Bethany, Waynesburg found itself in an 18-point hole against the host Bison. However, instead of giving up the fight, the Yellow Jackets showed their mettle by rallying and cutting the deficit all the way to a single basket with less than a minute left in the contest. Unfortunately, the visitors couldn't complete what would have been a memorable comeback and came up short in a 60-51 contest.
Things started slowly for both offense as the first 10 minutes saw just 13 total points produced by the two opponents. After 10 minutes of play, Waynesburg (0-7, 0-7) held a 7-6 edge. Freshman guard
Avery Robinson (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) was responsible for five of those points, while fellow freshman guard
Marley Wolf (Ellwood City, Pa. / Riverside) tallied the other two points on a field goal.
Momentum swung to the Bison (3-4, 3-4) in period number two, which saw both teams find their offensive rhythm. By the time halftime rolled around, the home team held a 28-22 advantage. The third quarter saw Bethany take control of the contest and build leads as large as 17 points, before taking a 47-32 advantage to the fourth-and-final period.
A Bison three-pointer at the opening of the quarter made the score 50-32 in favor of the host squad. However, Waynesburg rallied with an inspired 19-4 run and with 2:22 showing on the game clock, the Jacket deficit was just three (54-51).
The Orange and Black worked hard to tie the score over the next two minutes, but couldn't find the bottom of the basket. A foul on Waynesburg with 27 seconds left to play gave Bethany a chance to take a two-basket lead, which it did thanks to a pair of free throws. This forced the Jackets to foul for the remainder of the night. The Bison took advantage of the situation and wound up connecting on six-straight foul shots over the last 27 seconds to close out the win.
Senior
Andrea Orlosky (Shelocta, Pa. / West Shamokin) posted a double-double on 13 points and a game-best 11 rebounds. Wolf paced the Jackets with 14 points, while Robinson chipped in 10 in the setback.
Though it didn't lead to a win, Waynesburg outrebounded Bethany by a 42-31 advantage.
The Jackets return to action on Saturday, March 6, when they host Thiel. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
