WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 27) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team hit the turf at John F. Wiley Stadium on Saturday night for a showdown with Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Bethany. The Bison left town with an 18-9 win.
Things started well for Waynesburg (0-4, 0-4), when it got the game's opening goal from junior
Lily Portman (Roaming Shoe, Ohio / Grand Valley) just 49 seconds into the contest. Bethany (1-2, 1-2) answered with back-to-back scores to take a 2-1 edge. The Jackets tied things back up thanks a tally from sophomore
Hannah Rosenberger (Bruceton Mills, W.Va. / Preston) 2:24 into the first half.
The Bison posted the next two goals to build a 4-2 lead before the first four minutes of the game had ticked away. Junior
Camryn Dyer (Church Hill, Md. / Queen Annes County) brought her team back within a goal after splitting the pipes with 22:31 showing on the first-half clock.
However, Bethany went on a 7-1 run to end the half and take a commanding 11-4 lead into the break. The Bison advantage grew to 13-4 early in the second period. Goals by Rosenberger and Portman sandwiched around a Bethany tally cut the deficit down to 14-6. However, four-straight scores by the visiting squad put the game out of reach at 18-6.
The Jackets didn't give up the fight, however, as sophomore
Rachel Caldwell (Ligonier, Pa. / Ligonier Valley), Rosenberger and sophomore
Eve O'Sullivan (Latrobe, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) combined to score the final three goals of the night to bring about the final score.
Rosenberger put together her best game as a Jacket in the loss. She led the Jackets in goals (three), shots (nine), shots on goal (eight), ground balls (seven) and draw controls (four).
O'Sullivan totaled three points on two goals and an assist, while logging seven shots, all on goal.
Senior goalkeeper
Riley Yoder (Lancaster, Ohio / Fisher Catholic) totaled seven saves over a full 60 minutes in net.
Waynesburg is back in action on Thursday, April 1, when it travels to Saint Vincent. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
