Women's soccer battles W&J under the lights

Late offensive flurry doesn't produce tying goal in 1-0 loss

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (March 30) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team hosted Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) rival Washington & Jefferson Tuesday evening. Trailing late in the second half, the Yellow Jackets had multiple offensive opportunities to try and tie the game, but ultimately the Presidents' held off the furious comeback attempt to take the game 1-0.

Waynesburg (1-3, 1-3) started off strong offensively, generating chances with two corner kicks in the first 10 minutes of action. The two teams continued to battle back-and-forth as they each buckled down defensively and prevented each other from many offensive opportunities throughout the remainder of the first half.

W&J (1-2-1, 1-2-1) got on the board in the 57th minute, converting a header off a corner following a save just seconds before by sophomore keeper Faith Falick (Bridgeville, Pa. / South Fayette).

After that point, the momentum swung in Waynesburg's favor as the team piled on shot-after-shot over the final 25 minutes. In that timeframe, the Yellow Jackets outshot the Presidents 8-1, including four in the final seven minutes of gameplay. As a part of the offensive flurry, Waynesburg had three corner kicks during that seven-minute stretch, but couldn't find the back of the net before the clock ran out.

There were 10 different Yellow Jackets that recorded a shot in the contest, including sophomore midfielder Sarah Rentler (Mount Lebanon, Pa. / Mount Lebanon), senior midfielder Jill Moyer (Cressona, Pa. / Blue Mountain) and freshman defender Grace Ingram (Valencia, Pa. / Mars), who each had two.

Falick was strong in net, making five saves over 90 minutes of action.

As a team, Waynesburg outshot W&J 13-10 and had eight total corner kicks compared to W&J's two.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action next Tuesday, April 6, when they travel to New Wilmington, Pennsylvania to take on the Westminster Titans. Start time is set for 7 p.m.
