Football hits the road to Bethany

Flack rushes for 96 yards and a score, but Bison down Jackets 40-7

BETHANY, W.Va. (April 9) – The Waynesburg University football team hit the road for the first time this season on Friday, when it traveled to Bethany for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) South Division contest with the Bison. Sophomore running back Justin Flack (Derry, Pa. / Derry) had a strong night running the football, but it wasn't enough, as the Yellow Jackets fell 40-7.

Flack carried the ball 17 times for a game-high 96 yards and a touchdown for Waynesburg (0-3, 0-2). He also caught a pair of passes for seven yards.

Flack's first score of the season, a two-yard rush to pay dirt, came early in the second quarter following an interception and 48-yard return from senior defensive back Connor Hudson (Summerhill, Pa. / Forest Hills) that put the ball at the two-yard line. Flack knifed his way into the endzone on second and goal. Following a successful PAT try by sophomore Jerod Witwicki (McDonald, Pa. / Bishop Canvein), Waynesburg trailed by just seven points at 14-7 with 10:13 remaining in the first half.

Unfortunately, Bethany (1-2, 1-1) scored 13 unanswered points to end the period and take a 27-7 advantage into the locker room. The host squad tacked on 13 more points in the second half to seal the win.

While, Flack was pacing the Waynesburg offense, linebacker Alec Hendal (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon-McMillan) continued to build on a solid freshman season by tying for the game lead with nine total tackles, three of which were solo stops. Sophomore Brandon Ntankeu (Hyattsville, Md. / Montgomery Blair) tied for the game lead with six solo tackles, as part of an eight-tackle night.

Sophomore defensive lineman Shawn Hytla (Moon, Pa. / Moon) logged six tackles, 2.0 tackles for a loss and a sack.

Waynesburg returns to action on Saturday, April 17, when it heads to Latrobe, Pennsylvania, to face Saint Vincent in a PAC South Division showdown. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
