WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 10) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team hosted Chatham Saturday night for a Presidents' Athletic Conference contest. The Yellow Jackets scored the first goal of the match, but the conference-leading Cougars locked in after that and rolled to a 19-5 victory.
Just 52 second into the game, sophomore attacker
Eve O'Sullivan (Latrobe, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) found the back of the net to give the Yellow Jackets (0-7, 0-3) a 1-0 lead. Chatham (5-1, 3-0) responded quickly by tying things up roughly a minute later.
The Cougars took the lead for good a minute after their first goal and followed that up with their third goal of the night five minutes into the game.
Despite falling behind 3-1 early, the Yellow Jackets played solid defensively and prevented the Cougars from scoring again for over 12 minutes of in-game action, as their fourth tally didn't come until the 16
th minute of the opening half. Chatham recorded seven more scores before the halftime break to go ahead 11-1.
Waynesburg's second goal of the evening came from sophomore midfielder
Hannah Rosenberger (Bruceton Mills, W.Va. / Preston) with 27:01 in the second half. Chatham built the lead up to 18-2 before the Yellow Jackets got their third goal with just over 10 minutes left in the game, this time from sophomore midfielder
Rachel Caldwell (Ligonier, Pa. / Ligonier Valley).
Chatham added their 19
th and final goal with four minutes to play in the contest. However, The Yellow Jackets added two more goals in the final four minutes, both from Rosenberger. Her second goal of the contest and the team's fourth was a highlight reel effort that saw the sophomore go behind her back while falling to the turf.
Rosenberger completed the hat trick just before time expired to bring about the final score.
Rosenberger's three goals were tied for the most she's had in a game this season. She also had a team-high three draw controls.
Senior goalkeeper
Riley Yoder (Lancaster, Ohio / Fisher Catholic) had a team-high four ground balls and made 15 saves in the contest.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Wednesday, April 14, when they host Thiel in a Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup. Start time is set for 6 p.m.
