NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (April 5) – The Waynesburg University baseball team traveled to Westminster for a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference matchups. Unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets, the Titans got quick starts in both contests and never looked back, taking both ends of the doubleheader by scores of 12-2 and 14-2, respectively.
In the first game, Westminster (6-10, 4-8) took advantage of some control issues by junior starting pitcher
Cody Ray (St. Clairsville, Ohio / Union Local), who walked four batters and hit another as the Titans managed to plate seven runs in the first inning. Westminster added another run in the second to take an 8-0 lead.
Waynesburg (4-8, 2-7) started to string some things together in the top of the third. Junior shortstop
Ty Kildow (Bethesda, Ohio / Union Local) led off the inning with a single before senior designated hitter
Ryan Mills (Westminster, Md. / Westminster) walked. Freshman second baseman
Nolan Vertullo (Pittsburgh, Pa. / South Fayette) followed them up with a single to load the bases with no outs. Freshman third baseman
Mike Bell (Herminie, Pa. / Yough) singled in Kildow and Mills to cut the deficit to 8-2. However, each of the next three Waynesburg batters got out to end the threat.
The Titans plated three more runs in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth to bring about the final score.
The Yellow Jackets had just five hits in the first game, with senior catcher
Chris Lee (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) going two-for-three with a double.
The second game followed a similar script, although the Titans waited until the second inning to start the scoring. Westminster pushed one run across and had the bases loaded with two outs before a four-run play, a triple with an error that scored the Titan batter, extended the lead to 5-0.
Waynesburg got on the board in the top of the fourth inning thanks to a sacrifice fly by graduate student catcher
John Przybylinski (Connellsville, Pa. / Connellsville) that scored Lee and cut the deficit to 5-1.
However Westminster plated four more in the bottom of the frame to put the game out of reach.
The Titans added one more in the fifth, three more in the sixth and one more in the seventh to extend the lead to 14-1.
The Yellow Jackets got their final run of the afternoon in the top of the eighth when Przybylinski was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Vertullo.
Senior right fielder
Brandon Durbin (Cresson, Pa. / Bishop Carroll) was a perfect three-for-three in the second game and also reached base a fourth time when he was hit by a pitch.
Waynesburg will be back in action Saturday, April 10 when it travels to Washington & Jefferson for a PAC doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
