MEADVILLE, Pa. (Sept. 17) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team traveled to Allegheny College for a pair of matches in the Allegheny Gator Invitational. The Yellow Jackets fell 3-1 to the host Gators in their first match, but bounced back to defeat Mount Aloysius 3-1.
After falling 25-16 in set one against Allegheny (7-2), the Jackets (6-4) bounced back to take set two 25-21. The Gators went on to close out the victory by winning sets three (25-19) and four (25-21).
Freshman
Makayla Osborn (Salem, Ohio / Heartland Christian School) continued her impressive debut season by piling up a match-high 19 kills. Freshman
Paige Cousley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) helped out the attack with a contest-best 24 assists. Senior
Alyson Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / St. Joseph Central Catholic) set yet another match high for Waynesburg by posting 31 digs.
Waynesburg's late match with Mount Aloysius (0-7) was a four-set battle between the squads. The Jackets opened the contest with a 27-25 victory and took a 2-0 advantage after scoring a 26-24 triumph. The Mounties extended the contest to four sets following a 26-24 win, but Waynesburg bounced back by taking set four 25-21.
Osborn paced the offense again with a team-high 18 kills. Senior
Hannah Buhr (Jefferson, Md. / Brunswick) chipped in 11 kills, while junior
Kayla Stohon (Summerhill, Pa. / Forest Hills) put down 10 successful attacks.
Cousley and sophomore Mikayla Baniaga (Kalihi, Hawaii / Kamehameha Schools Kapalama) helped out the entire Jacket offense with 25 and 21 assists, respectively. Johnson outdid herself in match two by piling up a match-high 41 digs. Speaking of defensive excellence, Stohon put back a match-high seven total blocks.
Waynesburg will finish its two-day stay at the Gator Invitational tomorrow with a match against La Roche. The Yellow Jackets already own a win against the Redhawks from earlier this year. Start time tomorrow is set for 1 p.m.
