MEADVILLE, Pa. (Sept. 18) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team continued to build on its best start to a season when it took on La Roche at the Allegheny Gator Invitational. The Yellow Jackets defeated La Roche for the second time this season, this time by a 3-1 final score.
With the win, Waynesburg improved to 7-4 overall, which is the highest win total after 11 games since before the 2005 season.
The Jackets got off to a quick start by taking set one 25-16. After La Roche (2-10) rebounded to take set two by a 25-21 final score. Waynesburg made a statement in set three by rolling to a 25-12 final score and closed things out by downing the Redhawks 25-21.
Senior
Hannah Buhr (Jefferson, Md. / Brunswick) enjoyed her best output of the season by putting down a match-high 11 kills. Freshman
Makayla Osborn (Salem, Ohio / Heartland Christian School), while fellow freshman (
Madisen Dayton (Ridgeley, W.Va. / Calvary Christian Academy) and junior Alexys March (Panama, N.Y. / Panama Central) chipped in seven successful attacks each to the winning effort.
The Waynesburg offense was helped out by sophomore
Mickayla Baniaga (Kalihi, Hawaii / Kamehameha Schools Kapalama), who logged a match-high 17 assists. Freshman
Hayley Dufala (Cleveland, Ohio / Valley Forge) recorded 14 helpers of her own.
Dufala and Baniaga recorded double-doubles on the day with 14 and 11 digs, respectively. The Jackets were led defensively by senior
Alyson Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / St. Joseph Central Catholic), who piled up a team-high 23 digs.
Waynesburg returns to the court on Tuesday, Sept. 21, with a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match against Bethany. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
