BEAVER FALLS, PA. (Sept. 23) – The Waynesburg University women's volleyball team traveled to Geneva on Thursday night for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match with the Golden Tornadoes. After a bit of a slow start, the Yellow Jackets battled back to give the host squad a fight, before the GT's closed out a 3-1 win.
Geneva (4-10, 1-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after taking set one 25-21, and set two 25-18. Waynesburg (7-6, 1-2) pulled itself back into the contest with a 25-20 triumph in set three. Set four was a back-and-forth affair. Unfortunately, the Tornadoes were able to put together the last big run and clinch set and match 25-21.
Freshman
Makayla Osborn (Salem, Ohio / Heartland Christian School) led the Jackets by setting team highs in kills (12) and service aces (four). She completed a double-double with 10 digs.
Sophomore
Mickayla Baniaga (Kalihi, Hawaii / Kamehameha Schools Kapalama) helped out the offense with a team-high 17 assists. Freshman
Paige Cousley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) chipped in 10 helpers.
Defensively, the Jackets were led by senior
Alyson Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / St. Joseph Central Catholic), who came up with an impressive 39 digs Cousley picked up a double-double of her own with 16 digs, while classmate
Jordan Stein (Manor, Pa. / Norwin) posted a 14-dig night. When it came to defense around the net, freshman
Emma Hyatt (Carmichaels, Pa. / Carmichaels), senior
Mya Brooks (Lansing, Mich. / Holt) and junior
Kayla Stohon (Summerhill, Pa. / Forest Hills) posted six, four and four blocks, respectively.
The Jackets return to the court on Saturday, Sept. 25, when they compete in a PAC tri-match hosted by Washington & Jefferson. Waynesburg will face the host Presidents at 3 p.m., as well as Franciscan at 1 p.m.
