Volleyball splits matches at marathon PAC tri-match

Yellow Jackets bounce back from five-set loss to Franciscan with five-set win over W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Sept. 25) – It was a long, tiring day for the Waynesburg University volleyball team, as it participated in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) tri-match at Washington & Jefferson on Saturday. After playing 10 combined sets against Franciscan and the host Presidents, Waynesburg came away with a 1-1 day on the courts.

The Yellow Jackets (8-7, 2-3) opened their match with the Barons (2-6, 1-5) by taking set one 25-20. After Franciscan bounced back to take set two 25-23, Waynesburg regained the advantage with a 25-23 triumph in set three. Unfortunately, not only did the Barons force a fifth set by winning set four 25-17, but they clinched the victory with a 15-10 triumph in the finale.

Freshman Makayla Osborn (Salem, Ohio / Heartland Christian School) paced the Jacket attack with a team-high 13 kills. She also led her squad with a pair of service aces. Classmate Madisen Dayton (Ridgeley, W.Va. / Calvary Christian Academy) chipped in nine kills, while junior Kayla Stohon (Summerhill, Pa. / Forest Hills) added eight successful attacks. The sophomore/freshman combo of Mickayla Baniaga (Kalihi, Hawaii / Kamehameha Schools Kapalama) and Paige Cousley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) posted double-digit assists with 20 and 14, respectively.

Senior Alyson Johnson (Raceland, Ky. / St. Joseph Central Catholic) continued a fantastic final collegiate season with 32 digs. Freshman Jordan Stein (Manor, Pa. / Norwin) added 24 digs, while Osborn completed a double-double with 19 digs.

The loss seemed to fire up Waynesburg, which raced out to a 2-0 advantage over W&J (2-11, 2-4) with set victories of 25-19 and 25-15. The Presidents bounced back to take sets three and four by identical scores of 25-22. However, the Jackets weren't about to let a second-straight match get away from them. Despite playing in its 10th set of the day, Waynesburg found the energy to roll to a 15-6 triumph in set number five.

The trio of senior Mya Brooks (Lansing, Mich. / Holt), Osborn and Dayton all reached double digits in kills against the Presidents. Brooks and Osborn finished one-two in terms of most successful attacks for either side in the match with 14 and 13, respectively, while Dayton added 12 of her own. Once again, Cousley and Baniaga teamed up to handle the setting duties. This time it was Cousley finishing ahead of Baniaga, with the duo posting 30 and 17 helpers, respectively.

Johnson, Osborn and Dayton all wound up with 15 digs or better in the late contest. Johnson led the charge with a team-high 36, while Osborn posted her second double-double of the day with 26. Dayton logged a double-double of her own with 15 digs.

Cousley was very effective behind the service line, as she piled up a match-high seven aces against the Presidents. Stohon tied for the match lead in blocks with four.

Johnson also reached a major personal milestone in the split by eclipsing 1,000 collegiate digs.

In terms of team milestones, Waynesburg's win over W&J completed the program's first two-game season sweep of a PAC opponent since going 2-0 against both Chatham and Thiel in 2015.

Waynesburg will get a chance to rest up from Saturday's marathon stay in Washington before returning to competition on Tuesday, Sept. 28, with a home conference match against Grove City. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
