WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 29) – The Waynesburg University women's tennis team played host to perennial Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) powerhouse Grove City on Wednesday. Though the 9-0 final score didn't reflect it, several Yellow Jackets turned in solid performances against the visiting Wolverines, particularly in singles competition.
After Grove City (6-2, 2-1) swept through the doubles contests, Waynesburg (0-7, 0-5) pushed the Wolverines to a third set in both the first and fourth flights. Senior
Kyleigh Schmidt (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) took set one at number-one singles 6-4, before her opponent bounced back with a 6-4 triumph of her own. The match was decided in the third by the final score of 13-11.
Number-four singles saw junior
Marina Hastings (Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) rebound from a 6-3 loss in the opener with a gritty 7-5 win in set two. Again, the visitors were able to come out on top in the third (10-4).
Waynesburg is back in action on Friday, Oct. 1, when it hosts Saint Vincent for a 4:30 p.m. PAC matchup. It will be the Jackets' fourth match in seven days.
