Men's soccer battles Allegheny in season opener

Jackets erase two-goal deficit, but drop heartbreaker in 2OT

MEADVILLE, Pa. (Sept. 4) – After falling behind 2-0 to host Allegheny, the Yellow Jacket men's soccer team looked like it was in for a long day against the Gators on Saturday. However, Waynesburg battled back to tie the match at 2-2 and force overtime. Unfortunately, the host squad got the golden goal in the second overtime frame and claim a 3-2 victory.

The Gators (1-0-1) opened the scoring just 1:47 in the contest and took a 1-0 edge into halftime. Just over four minutes into the second half, they doubled their advantage to 2-0.

However, senior Daniel Hott (Cumberland, Md. / Fort Hill) broke up the shutout in the 53rd minute after taking a feed from sophomore Logan Corradi and finding the back of the net. Freshman Connor Jacobs (Waynesboro, Pa. / Waynesboro) tied the contest in the 78th minute with his first collegiate goal, which came off on assist by junior Samuel Hawkins (St. Mary's County, Md. / Great Mills).

The score stayed knotted at 2-2 through the entirety of the first overtime period. Unfortunately, the first shot of OT number two found the back of the net for Allegheny and closed out the marathon contest.

Freshman goalkeeper Michael Francus (Bethel Park, Pa. / Bethel Park) faced a barrage of shots in his collegiate debut, but played well enough to allow his team to make its run at a comeback. He stopped 12-of-15 attempts that Allegheny put on net. The Gators out-shot Waynesburg by a 32-11 margin.

The Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 8, when they host La Roche at John F. Wiley Stadium. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
