BETHANY, W.Va. (Jan. 20) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team traveled to Bethany for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup with the host Bison. Bethany jumped out to a big early lead and never looked back, as the Yellow Jackets fell 72-51.
The Bison (8-5, 3-3) tallied 24 of the combined 30 points scored in the first quarter and held a 24-6 advantage heading to the second period. Waynesburg (1-12, 1-6) was able to cut into the deficit by outscoring Bethany 21-14 before the halftime break. At one point in that second period, the Jackets trailed by just nine (30-21) with three minutes showing on the clock. The host squad regained some of its momentum and led 38-27 at the break.
Unfortunately for the visitors, Bethany regained firm control of the contest by outscoring the Orange and Black 19-8 in the third quarter to all but put the game out of reach. Things started well for the Jackets as the second half got underway, thanks to a three-pointer by senior guard
Kacey Kastroll (South Park, Pa. / South Park) that made the score 38-30.
The key run of the game came shortly after Kastroll's make, as Bethany outscored the Jackets 19-5 over the remainder of the period.
Though they came in a losing effort, sophomore guard
Avery Robinson (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) and senior center
Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) both put up some noteworthy numbers on the evening. Robinson led the Jackets with 19 points, 18 of which came courtesy of a six-for-eight showing from three-point range. Fuller was a force on the glass, as she pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds. She came on field goal shy of a double-double after posting eight points.
Waynesburg is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 22, when it hosts Grove City. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
