Women's soccer locks horns with Bison

Jackets grab 2-0 lead, but second-half PKs spell doom in 4-2 loss at Bethany

BETHANY, W.Va. (Oct. 11) – The Waynesburg University women's soccer team traveled to Bethany for a Tuesday afternoon matchup with the Bison. A pair of penalty kicks by the home team ultimately led to the day's final outcome, which went 4-2 against the Yellow Jackets.

Things got off to a great start for Waynesburg (3-5-5, 1-2-4) which tallied the first two goals of the game within the first 5:10 of play. Sophomore Demaree Livingston (Willow Grove, Pa. / Upper Dublin) opened the scoring with an unassisted score late in the third minute of play.

The Orange and Black doubled its advantage early in the fifth minute thanks to the efforts of senior Sarah Rentler (Mount Lebanon, Pa. / Mount Lebanon). Rentler's second goal of the 2022 campaign made it 2-0 Waynesburg and set the visitors up to run their unbeaten streak to six-straight contests.

Unfortunately, Bethany started its comeback in the 21st minute with its first point of the day. The Jackets were able to slow the opposition for the remainder of the opening half and took its one-score edge into the break.

The second half belonged to the Bison, who scored three times over the final 45 minutes. Two of those goals were on penalty kicks, the first of which tied the score at 2-2 11 minutes into the period. Bethany took its first lead of the day midway through the 63rd minute, before a second converted PK brought about the final score with just 1:44 showing on the scoreboard clock.

Waynesburg took the loss despite holding a slim 12-11 edge in total shots and a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Senior Kennedy Schuck (Marietta, Ohio / Marietta) got the start in net and made one save over 90 minutes in goal.

Waynesburg will look to bounce back from Tuesday's defeat when it hosts Westminster for senior day on Saturday, Oct. 15. Start time from John F. Wiley Stadium is scheduled for 4 p.m.
