WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Sept. 15) – The Waynesburg University volleyball team won its first President's Athletic Conference (PAC) match of the 2022 season on Saturday morning at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Waynesburg (3-18, 1-5) also snapped a 12-match losing streak in a 3-0 victory against Franciscan.
The Yellow Jackets defeated Franciscan (8-11, 1-5) with set scores of 25-17, 25-19, and 25-21 to win their third match of the season, all coming at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The home team registered 30 total kills, 11 in both the second and third sets.
Senior
Alexys Marsh (Panama N.Y. / Panama Central) and freshman
Paige Mortimore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brentwood) both led Waynesburg with six kills. Marsh also paced the Jackets in digs (25) and added three blocks.
Waynesburg totaled five aces and six blocks against the Barons, compared to only one apiece for the visitors.
Junior
Trysten Smith (Senecaville, Ohio / Shenandoah) paced all players with a match-high three aces and 12 assists. Sophomore
Jordan Stein (Manor, Pa. / Norwin) recorded an ace and 19 digs. Sophomore
Paige Cousley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) was also an effective server (one ace) and passer (16 digs).
A match-high four blocks from junior Brooklyn Layman (Lynchburg, Ohio / Lynchburg-Clay) guided the Yellow Jackets' defensive efforts at the net.
Waynesburg returns to the court at Washington & Jefferson Wednesday night. The match begins at 7 p.m.
