Volleyball plays five against Westminster

Yellow Jackets fall in back-and-forth match wtih Titans

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Oct. 22) – The Waynesburg University women's volleyball team welcomed Westminster to John F. Wiley Stadium on Saturday afternoon for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match. The two teams locked horns in a back-and-forth match that went a full five sets. Unfortunately, by the time the final point was scored, it was the Titans who left town with a 3-2 win.
 
Westminster (3-22, 1-7) got on the board first with a 25-20 victory in set one. Waynesburg (3-19, 1-7) rebounded to take the second set 25-21. Momentum swung back to the visiting side with a 25-22 triumph, before the Jackets forced a winner-take-all fifth set by taking the fourth 25-20.
 
Set five saw the two opponents trade the first six points. Unfortunately, a 9-0 run by Westminster put the Jackets in a 12-3 deficit that led to a 15-5 final score.
 
The Waynesburg offense was led by senior Alexys Marsh (Panama, N.Y. / Panama Central), who put down a match-high 18 kills. Senior Kayla Stohon (Summerhill, Pa. / Forest Hills) added 15 kills to the Waynesburg attack, while freshman Paige Mortimore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brentwood) chipped in 10 successful attacks.
 
Junior Trysten Smith (Senecaville, Ohio / Shenandoah) helped out with a contest-best 25 assists. Freshman Riley Ruffley (Bedford, Pa. / Bedford) set up 18 successful attacks.
 
Defensively, the Jackets were paced by sophomore Jordan Stein (Manor, Pa. / Norwin), who produced a match-high 32 digs. Marsh completed a double-double thanks to 17 digs. Sophomore Paige Cousley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) came up with 15 digs of her own.
 
Stohon was a solid presence at the net with a match-best four blocks.
 
Waynesburg is off until Thursday, Oct. 27, when it heads to Bethany for its final road match of the season. Start time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
