Yellow Jackets travel to Saint Vincent

Waynesburg has rough trip to Latrobe in loss to Bearcats

LATROBE, Pa. (Nov. 5) – The Waynesburg University football team traveled to Saint Vincent on Saturday for a road Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup. A slew of big plays for the Bearcats in the early portion of the game set the tone for a rough day on the field for the visitors, who fell 53-16.

Saint Vincent (4-5, 4-3) was rolling from the opening kickoff with a 100-yard return for a touchdown. Those six points started a 19-0 run for the Bearcats, which was also the score at the end of the first quarter.

Waynesburg (4-5, 3-4) broke up the shutout with a 20-yard field goal from junior Ricco Sastoque (Concord, N.C. / Northwest Cabbarus) midway through the second quarter that made the score 19-3. Back-to-back touchdowns from the home team made the score 32-3.

The Jackets found the endzone before halftime thanks to a 65-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback Thomas Burke III (West Leechburg, Pa. / Leechburg) to sophomore wide receiver Dakota Romantino (Charleroi, Pa. / Charleroi). A Sastoque PAT made the score 32-10.

Unfortunately, Saint Vincent was able to squeeze in one more score before halftime and took a 39-10 advantage into the break.

Things didn't get any better for Waynesburg in the second half. After neither team scored in the third quarter, the Bearcats grew their lead to 53-10 late in the fourth. Freshman running back Zayne Cawley (Huntingtown, Md. / Huntingtown) closed out the day with a personal milestone by scoring his first collegiate touchdown with one second showing on the clock.

The Waynesburg running game produced 263 yards on the ground, which was more than twice Saint Vincent's total of 120 yards. Sophomore running back Hunter Cameron (Armagh, Pa. / United) led the charge for the Jackets with a team-high 85 yards on 14 carries. Senior Justin Flack (Derry, Pa. / Derry) tallied 78 yards on 18 carries, while graduate student running back Nick Hall (Fayette City, Pa. / Belle Vernon) chipped in 61 yards on 13 totes.

Flack added 58 yards on three catches for 136 total yards.

Junior linebacker Chase Nicomatti (Port Vue, Pa. / South Allegheny) highlighted Waynesburg's defensive efforts with a pair of sacks.

The Jackets wrap up the 2022 regular season on Saturday, Nov. 12, when they celebrate senior day against Washington & Jefferson. Kickoff for the PAC Backyard Brawl is scheduled for 1 p.m.
