Jacket women suffer heart-breaking home loss

Buzzer-beating three pointer allows Westminster to escape with PAC win

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 12) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hosted Westminster on Saturday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) showdown at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The Yellow Jackets were poised to pull a significant upset over the Titans, but a buzzer-beating three pointer by the visitors delivered a gut punch that sent the host squad to a 58-57 loss.

Trailing 47-36 going into the fourth quarter, the Jackets (4-17, 4-11) combined a stingy defense that allowed just 11 points over the final 10 minutes with a 10-for-17 shooting performance from the floor that yielded 21 points.

A three-pointer from sophomore guard Marley Wolf (Ellwood City, Pa. / Riverside) with just over a minute left in the game gave the Jackets their first multi-basket lead of the contest at 55-51. A pair of Westminster layups tied the game at 55-55 with 11 seconds showing on the clock, but senior center Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) came through in the clutch after dropping in a go-ahead layup with four seconds showing on the clock. Junior guard Anika Dansby (Massilon, Ohio / Washington) delivered the assist to set Fuller up for what looked like the go-ahead basket.

Unfortunately, Westminster used a timeout to draw up the play that resulted in the game-winning trey that stunned the crowd gathered at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

Though it came in a losing effort, Fuller put together an impressive evening on the hardwood. She combined 21 points, a game-high 16 rebounds and a contest-best six assists. Speaking of assists, Dansby handed out five of her own, and Waynesburg tallied 19 as a team on 25 made field goals. The third-year point guard also grabbed eight rebounds and swiped two steals.

Freshman forward Madisen Dayton (Ridgeley, W.Va. / Calvary Christian Academy) recorded 10 points on five-of-10 shooting, five rebounds and two assists.

Saturday was the first of four-straight home games to close out the regular season for Waynesburg. The Jackets are back on the court Monday when they host Thiel. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
