WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 14) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hosted Thiel on Monday for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup. The Yellow Jackets rolled past the Tomcats to the tune of a 79-58 win.
Things started slowly for Waynesburg (5-17, 5-11), which trailed 6-3 after 1:05 of play. Thiel (4-15, 2-11) still led 8-7 following 5:18 of action. However, an 11-0 run over the next 3:40 allowed the Yellow Jackets to take an 18-8 advantage. Sophomore guard
Marley Wolf (Ellwood City Pa. / Riverside) and freshman forward
Madisen Dayton (Ridgeley, W.Va. / Calvary Christian Academy) tallied seven and four points, respectively, with all five field goals coming in the paint.
Thiel stopped the surge, but Dayton logged a buzzer-beating layup to give her team a 20-10 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Jacket lead grew to 26-12 after 2:15 of action in the second quarter. The host squad led for the remainder of the half and another buzzer-beating field goal, this one a three pointer by junior guard
Anika Dansby (Massilon, Ohio / Washington), sent Waynesburg to the locker room with a 41-26 advantage.
The third quarter saw the Jackets lead by as many as 19 points (58-39) following a three pointer by sophomore guard
Avery Robinson (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) with 59 seconds showing on the scoreboard. More last-second points came when Wolf drew a foul with one second remaining in the quarter and connected on one-of-two free throws to put Waynesburg up 59-41.
The home team truly put the game out of reach in the fourth when a 12-0 run turned a 19-point lead into a 77-46 advantage. With 3:48 left to play, Waynesburg head coach
Sam Jones went to his bench to close out the evening.
Senior center
Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) posted her second double-double in as many games and seventh of the season after recording a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. Wolf tallied 16 points, while Robinson posted 13 points and six boards. Dansby did a fantastic job of distributing the basketball as she handed out a game-high eight assists to go with seven points and three rebounds.
Dayton continued to look like one of the top bench players in the conference as she posted a double-double of her own on 11 points and 11 rebounds, six of which were on the offensive side. She shot five-of-seven from the floor and did all of it while only playing 19 minutes.
