Jacket women face PAC-leading W&J

Waynesburg falls on the road

WAYNESBURG, Pa. (Feb. 9) – The Waynesburg University women's basketball team hit the road on Wednesday to face the top team in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC). The Yellow Jackets dropped a 75-49 contest at Washington & Jefferson.

Things started well for the Jackets (4-16, 4-10), who jumped out to a 5-0 lead thanks to a three pointer by sophomore guard Avery Robinson (Ravenna, Ohio / Ravenna) followed by a pair of free throws from senior center Brooke Fuller (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton). W&J (17-4, 14-1) answered back with five points of its own to tie the score at 5-5.

These opening minutes of the quarter set the tone for the first 10 minutes of play, as there were three more lead changes before the end of the period. Another three ball from Robinson with 30 seconds showing on the first-quarter clock made the score 16-15 in favor of the Presidents, but the home team tallied the final field goal of the period to grab an 18-15 edge.

Unfortunately for Waynesburg, W&J opened the second quarter with a 14-0 run that allowed it to take control of the game and never relinquish it. By the time halftime rolled around, the Presidents led 36-21.

The host squad maintained double-digit leads throughout the third period and thanks to six-straight free throws before the beginning of the fourth quarter, W&J held a 55-30 advantage. That lead grew to as many as 29 points in the fourth, before the game reached its conclusion.

Fuller set game highs in both points (14) and rebounds (eight). Robinson chipped in 14 points of her own, 12 of which came on four made three pointers. Sophomore guard Marley Wolf (Ellwood City, Pa. / Riverside) added nine points to the Waynesburg effort.

Waynesburg returns to the court on Saturday, Feb. 12, when it hosts PAC rival Westminster. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. It is the first of four-straight home games to wrap up the Jackets' regular season schedule.
