NEW CONCORD, Ohio (March 23) – The Waynesburg University women's lacrosse team traveled to Muskingum on Wednesday night to square off with the Muskies. The two squads locked horns in a high scoring affair that resulted in Muskingum picking up a 22-14 win.
Waynesburg (0-3) was led by junior
Rachel Caldwell (Ligonier, Pa. / Ligonier Valley), who racked up a personal collegiate-high six goals. She also tied fellow junior
Eve O'Sullivan (Latrobe, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) for the team high during Wednesday night's matchup.
Juniors
Tori Meiklejohn (Boonsboro, Md. / Boonsboro) and
Alexis Shandor (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin) added goals of their own against Muskingum (2-3). Meiklejohn paced Waynesburg with two assists. Shandor, senior
Camryn Dyer (Church Hill, Md. / Queens Anne County) and junior
Tara Wildner (Johnstown, Pa. / Richland) also logged helpers for the Orange and Black.
Muskingum opened up a 3-0 lead following 6:12 of play, before Waynesburg answered with back-to-back tallies to trim its deficit to 3-2. The two squads alternated the next six scores and with 7:52 remaining in the opening period, the Jackets still trailed by just one point (6-5).
Unfortunately, the home team put together a four-goal run to take a 10-5 lead heading into quarter number two. Waynesburg posted the first two goals of the quarter to make the score 10-7, before the Muskies responded with three-straight tallies. O'Sullivan matched the feat on her own with a natural hat trick that made the score 13-10 Muskingum with 3:11 remaining in the quarter.
The game was ultimately decided as the game transitioned from the first half to the second, when the Muskies scored four goals over nearly 11 minutes of game time. Muskingum outscored Waynesburg 5-4 over the stretch run of the night to close out the win.
Freshman goalkeeper
Anna Bradley (Bridgeville, Pa. / South Fayette) started and played all 90 minutes in net for Waynesburg. She tallied five saves over the complete-game effort.
After more than three weeks of play, Waynesburg will play its first home game on Saturday, March 26, when it opens Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) competition against Chatham. Start time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
