WAYNESBURG, Pa. (April 13) – The Waynesburg University men's tennis team hosted Franciscan for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets battled the Barons during a rare warm, sunny day, but came out on the wrong end of a 6-3 final score.
The duo of senior
Joey English (Smithfield, Pa. / Homeschooled) and sophomore
Ethan Lown (Lebanon, Pa. / Elizabethtown) teamed up to get Waynesburg (5-5, 1-3) off on the right foot by winning their match at first doubles by the score of 8-5. After Franciscan (7-6, 4-1) took the other two flights, the visitors held a 2-1 advantage in the match.
English completed an impressive 2-0 day by rallying from a 6-0 loss in set one to take set two 6-4. The veteran standout closed out the victory with a hard-fought 10-7 victory in set three. Lown also went 2-0 on the afternoon with 6-2, 6-4 sweep at number-three singles.
Junior
Michael Saliba (New Kensington, Pa. / Valley) went the distance in his match at fifth singles, but came up just short 10-7 in the deciding third set.
Waynesburg is back in action on Monday, April 18, when it hosts Washington & Jefferson for another conference contest. Start time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
