NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (April 16) – The Waynesburg University baseball team traveled to Westminster on Saturday to complete the Yellow Jackets' three-game season series with the Titans. The first half of the contest was tightly played. However, the home team used a couple of big innings down the stretch of the contest to power a 9-2 win.
Westminster (17-7, 12-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Waynesburg (7-19, 3-11) answered right back in the top of the third with a two spot of its own. Sophomore
Mike Bell (Herminie, Pa. / Yough), who played both pitcher and third baseman on the day, brought both scores home with a two-run triple. Freshmen
Bryce Bedilion (Clarksville, Pa. / Jefferson-Morgan) and
Alec Engelmore (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler) scored on Bell's big hit.
Unfortunately, the rest of the game belonged to Westminster, which scored the deciding run in the bottom of the third. The Titans added a run in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Bedilion and sophomore
Nolan Vertullo (Pittsburgh, Pa. / South Fayette) logged two hits each on the day as part of an 11-hit effort for the Jackets.
Bell started and took the loss on the mound after allowing four runs on six hits and three walks over five innings of play. He racked up a game-high five strikeouts over the start.
The Jackets travel to Geneva on Tuesday, April 19, for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 1 p.m.
